Sheet Imposition and Signatures

A signature is a folded, nested group of pages; page count, binding, stock, creep, and press requirements determine the actual layout.

SHORT ANSWER

Start with the inputs you can verify

Divide the final page count into the printer’s required signature size, then plan blank pages where necessary. The imposition order is set by the folding scheme and production workflow, so use the printer’s template or software proof.

Page order is not reading order

A folded sheet places nonconsecutive pages together so they read correctly after folding and binding. Signature size depends on press, paper, binding, and finishing constraints.

Proof the imposed output

Confirm page count, blanks, creep, crossover images, fold marks, and binding with a printer proof. Do not manually rearrange pages unless the workflow requires it.

A practical workflow

  1. Confirm finished size, binding, and paper.
  2. Ask for the printer signature requirement.
  3. Plan required blank pages.
  4. Proof imposition before production.
