Bleed, trim, and safe-area calculator
Start with the finished trim size, then add the printer’s bleed and internal safe margin. The result distinguishes the exported document size from the area where important content should remain.

Method
How to use this tool
- 01
Enter the finished trim width and height.
- 02
Enter bleed per edge and the safe margin inside each trim edge.
- 03
Create artwork at the document size and keep critical content within the reported safe area.
Assumptions
What the math assumes
- The same bleed is applied to all four sides.
- The same safe margin is applied inward from all four trim edges.
- Dimensions describe rectangular flat artwork.
Production limits
Verify before output
- Printers may require asymmetric bleed, binding allowances, or dieline-specific clearances.
- Safe area is a layout aid, not a guarantee against finishing variation.

Frequently asked questions
Does bleed make the finished piece larger?
No. Bleed is printed beyond the trim and removed during finishing. The finished size remains the trim size.
Should crop marks sit inside the bleed?
No. Crop marks should be offset outside the bleed so they do not appear in the finished piece.
