Assumptions
What the math assumes
- DPI is treated as pixels per inch (PPI), the practical convention in print workflows.
- The calculation does not resample, sharpen, or inspect an image file.
- Millimetre conversions use exactly 25.4 mm per inch.
Production limits
Verify before output
- Suitable resolution depends on viewing distance, screening, substrate, press, and image content.
- A high pixel count does not prove that an image is sharp or free of compression artifacts.

Frequently asked questions
Is DPI the same as PPI?
Not technically. PPI describes image pixels and DPI describes device dots. This calculator uses the familiar “DPI” label while calculating pixels per inch.
Is 300 DPI always required?
No. It is a common target for close-viewed continuous-tone work, but large-format output and some print processes can use lower effective resolution. Confirm the production requirement with the printer.
Does changing metadata add detail?
No. Changing a resolution tag without resampling only changes the interpreted print size; it does not create new image detail.
